Telstra Bigpond in Australia uses a unique software login package to connect and maintain a connection to the ISP. This package is required by residential customers using Cable connections. ADSL customers use a standard PPPoE client.
A linux based alternative called
BPALogin was created some time ago. Latest versions of Linksys firmware include the

The Bigpond heartbeat packet is a UDP based packet sent from specific login servers. The login servers are maintained at
this website.
